AIH124 DXpedition Log
October 24–November 14, 2020

Note: Only relatively rare or otherwise interesting stations are listed.
Depending on conditions, another 500-1,000 MW stations more
could be identified during any week in Aihkiniemi.

 Europe (excluding Iberia)
kHz: day.month. time UTC: station, comments:
675.0000 7.11. 1913 Radio Calypso, Oostwold, sent a verification by Messenger in six minutes.
738 11.11. 1700 RTL in French - although RTL only has a transmitter on 234 kHz LW. The ID was confirmed by Christian Ghibaudo. I was actually hunting for Algeria, which is why I paid attention to the French announcements. The explanation is probably the so-called Luxembourg effect, which is indeed aptly named! This has nothing to do with receiver overload or the software used, but is a result of a phenomenon in the ionosphere. At closer inspection, the same RTL was found weaker on half a dozen other MW frequencies as well. More info here.
746.9951 12.11. 1536 Radio 0511, Ternaard.
819.0055 10.11. 0546 Studio Denakker, Klazienaveen. The station never seems to identify, although I've listened to it for hours on several days. This was a more common station in 2019 when it operated on 1395 kHz.
846 7.11. 2110 Album AM, Uden, giving a morse code ID. My report is featured on the station's website.
918.0077 7.11. 1920 Radio T-Pot, Gasselternijveen.
918.0280 7.11. 2038 Citrus AM, Ernst, giving also morse code station identifications.
927.0009 7.11. 1757 UNID new station testing with music and this pre-recorded announcement: "Ladies and gentlemen, please stand by as we are currently testing our systems". The signal was strong and was heard also on other days.
1008.0109 10.11. 0608 United AM, Neede, identifies in English. This was the longest reception on record (2199 km) for this 100-watt station.
1016.9958 29.10.
13.11.
-1901
1536
Amica Radio Veneta, Peraga di Vigonza, was heard also on several other days.
1206.89v 7.11. 1635 Sveriges Radio was the ID, obviously via some Swedish pirate transmitter, presumably from Småland. The modulation was poor, and the frequency shifted quite a bit, this 1206.889 being in the low end, and soon returning close to 1206 kHz.
1223.9984 8.11. 1610 Amplivier Radio, Damwâld.
1224.0074 29.10. 1746 Erasitehnikos Radiofonikos Stathmos, Tripoli, a hobby pirate station.
1286.9975 29.10.
10.11.

0518
Radio Seagull, Ternaard. I read that this program feed is aired at 1800-0600 UTC, with Radio 0511 filling the daylight hours.
1287 7.11. 1617 Radio 0511, Ternaard.
1304.9959 31.10. 1626 ERA programming, but would this be national or regional? An ID (or other announcement) sounds like "Radiofonikos ... Paragoias". Babis Karadimas places also this station in Tripoli.
1350 29.10. 2000 Radio Z-100, Milano, perhaps at 1350.0036 kHz.
1394.9956 7.11.
10.11.
1701
0459
Seabreeze AM, Grou, is the dominant Dutch station here, and was heard almost daily.
1395.0071 7.11. 2023 Sterrekijker AM, Elim. Mark Veldhuis kindly listened to my clip, as Dutch is not one of my top languages.
1466.9997 7.11. 1711 Radio Paradijs, Utrecht.
1467.0004v 29.10.
10.11.

1600
Radio Eldorado, Damwâld.
1476.0017 31.10. 1714 Museumsradio AM 1476, Bad Ischl, with Plattenkiste programming, announcing an email address wunsch@plattenkiste.radio. Many thanks to Andree Bollin for confirming the identity!
1485 8.11. 1727 Radio Studio X, Livorno. I heard the other transmitter (Arezzo on 1584 AM) already over 20 years ago. Grazie to Mauro Giroletti for discovering the identity of this station based on a cell phone number announced.
1511.9967 2.11.
10.11.
1658
0438
Energy FM, Sligo, with programming made for the Canary Islands, but presumably transmitting from Ireland over this unlicenced transmitter.

+ Milano XR, Milano, can be seen often on the spectrum, but the audio rarely surfaces due to many interfering stations.
1556.9997 7.11. 1647 Radio Adiaforos, Larisa. This is a (Greek hobby pirate) station run by Vasilis Karanasios.
1565.9989 29.10. 1624 Radio 015 Tríkala, Tríkala, a pirate station in the Thessaly region in Greece. Many thanks to Thanos Tzimourtas for identifying the station!
1584 26.10. 1803 Radio Regional, Otricoli.
1602.0114 29.10. 1621 Radio Geronimo, Karditsa, a Greek pirate station also on this frequency. Here's one (not very comprehensive) list of Greek AM pirates.
5895 1.11. 0900 Radio Northern Star, Bergen, heard easily in Lapland also on 1611 AM.
5939.9976 1.11. 0855 Radio Onda, Borculo. The station promotes Brazilian music, but there was a station ID even in French.
6070.0030 1.11. 0849 Channel 292, Rohrbach. First, Super Clan Radio programming until 0900 UTC, and then Radio Northsea International in German.
6160v 1.11. 0857- Shortwave Radio, Winsen, playing first instrumental music, and began with the "Weekend Review" program from the U.S. Initially the frequency was 6160.007 kHz, but within ten minutes it crept downward close to 6160.000 kHz.
6195.0490 1.11. -0932 Radio Pacman via Mike Radio, Heerde.

 Iberia
kHz: day.month. time UTC: station, comments:
800.9464 12.11. 1704 RNE1 Comunidad Valenciana, Castellón, was way off its nominal frequency. Also another RNE1 transmitter (from Castilla y León) is pretty far off from the nominal frequency at 800.9886 kHz.
1017 12.11. 1704 RNE5 Andalucia, Granada, with a regional break at this time.
1152.0000 9.11. 0624 RNE5 Zamora. This is not a rarity, but is worth mentioning because of a rare occurrence: Zamora began its local segment almost a minute before all the other RNE5 stations.
1152 10.11. 1855 RNE5 Andalucia, Málaga, climbed on top of the pile for less than a minute.
1305 2.11.

Radio Algérienne, Béchar. WRTH says this transmitter should have (only) local programming, but at least at this time it was airing the national Holy Koran channel in Arabic. Severe interference by RNE5 Barcelona, which fortunately had a slightly different offset at 576.0006 kHz.

Radio Benue 1, Makurdi, promoting also its Android app as one alternative to listen to the station. Seems to be audible best around 1900 UTC, and closing down around 2000 UTC. I rarely bother to listen to any station on so many days after getting an ID, but with such a great antenna in use on this DXpedition, I kept on looking for even better quality recordings.
935.9932 10.11. 0600 Radio Marocaine (SNRT), Agadir, managed to identify "... al-idaa al-wataniya" just as RNE5 and RAI stations were taking a breath at the top of the hour.
944.9923 26.10. 2008 Rádio Nacional São Tomé e Príncipe, Pinheira, was heard on most days with the new 214-degree antenna.
945.0010 12.11. 1943 Kebbi Radio, Birnin Kebbi. I chased this signal for two weeks with the new 1-kilometer antenna pointing to Nigeria before I finally got a good station ID.
972.0001 9.11. 0447 Katsina State Radio, Dutsin-Ma. The National anthem was played at 0505, even though programming had begun at least 20 minutes earlier.

1161 12.11. 0500 Radio Algérienne, In Salah, with news in French at the top of the hour.
1421.9972 28.10. 0500 Radio Algérienne, Ouled Fayet, a strong station without any interference in the mornings, and heard on many other days as well.

1440 24.10. 1400 AFN Humphreys, Pyeongtaek/Waegwan. Although "AFN Humphreys radio update" sounds like a local ID, at this time it was carried by both AFN transmitters on this frequency (and in very different parts of South Korea) simultaneously.
1584 25.10. 1430 + Datong Radio and TV Station, Economic and Literary Service (Dàtóng Guangbo Diànshì Tái, Jingjì Wényì Guangbo), Dàtóng SX // No ID, but "FM 98.7"

747 28.10. 1411 + 8JB ABC Radio Darwin, Jabiru NT, a fabulous catch discovered by Jim, and Graham at ABC was able to nail the identity, as it was airing a different feed from the other more powerful ABC stations on the same frequency.

1331.9955 28.10. 1342 4BU Bundaberg QLD, "On air and online at 4bu.com.au". 4BU was heard with stunning strength, and it was easy to get details of the many local commercial spots aired.
1341 28.10. 1338 2KY Sky Sports Radio, Newcastle NSW (relaying programming from 1017 AM). I heard how "Master Burbidge" finished first and "Dream Bolt" came second at a horse race on Fakenham racecourse in the UK.
