AIH133 DXpedition Log
January 31– February 13, 2021

 Asia
kHz: day.month. time UTC: station, comments:
720 2.2. 1850 Tentative: Radio Silaturahim, Bekasi.
927.0001 2.2. 2200 Radio Thailand, Chanthaburi, seems to be back on the air after years of absence. Announced frequencies of 97.5 (kao-sip-chet-ha) MHz and 891 (paet-roi-kao-sip-et) kHz in the sign-on station ID.
936 10.2. 1300 JOTR ABS Akita Hoso, Akita. I just realized that all these years I've neglected to send this relatively common station a reception report, so this state of affairs needs to be fixed now.
963 2.2. 2000 JOUG NHK1 Yamaguchi (675) via Hagi. The main station on 675 AM would be an even better catch, but this time the ID on that frequency was too weak to be reported.
998.9907 2.2. 1700 Phon Nueng Ror Or, Bangkok.
1035 10.2. 1540 JOJC NHK2 Yamagata (1521) via JOJD Tsuruoka.
1062 10.2. 1159 RAB Aomori Hoso, Noheji, a nice new 100-watt station.
1098 10.2. 1110 JOWO RFC Radio Fukushima, Koriyama.
1143 2.2. 2119 + DZMR Santiago was a really neat surprise, because normally Taiwan tends to totally dominate the frequency.
1161  2.2. 1700 Wor Sor Sor, Bangkok, closing down.
1161.0004 10.2. 1255 NHK1 Sendai regional programming.
1215 9.2. 2100 Shandong PBS (General Service), Linyi SD, has become a regular station here, replacing 1548 kHz.
1224 2.2. 2200 Thor Or 015, Chiang Rai, giving a local ID at this time. Another Thor Or station on the same frequency still remains to be caught.
1242 2.2.
12.2.
2157
1700
Sor Wor Sor (National Education Radio), Surat Thani, has reactivated this frequency and is audible regularly. At 2157 UTC all transmitter locations and frequencies were listed.
1251.0068 2.2. 2200 Thor Or 06, Bangkok. Not a rare station, but rare to hear it at this time with a local station ID: "Thaan Sathani Withayu Thahaan Akat sun-hok (06) Krung thep ..."
1251 12.2. 1200 HLKT CBS Daegu.
1260 7.2. 1516 DXRF Davao, relaying DZRH 666. This is already QSLed, but noted here because of a surprisingly strong signal even when conditions didn't particularly favor the Philippines.
1305 12.2. 1200 CNR8, a national channel for minority languages, transmitting in Korean here over multiple small transmitters in Nei Menggu.
1322.9951 2.2. 2157 Thor Or 013, Chiang Mai, with a local ID to kick off the day. Unfortunately no sign of the other Thor Or transmitter here.
1332 2.2. 1657 Thor Or 014, Mahasarakham, better than I've heard it before.
1359 4.2. 1540 JOBB NHK2 Osaka (828) via Fukuchiyama/Tadami-machi, here with two 100-watt relay stations, signing off for the day. Interestingly, the 46-degree antenna worked better here than the 60-degree wire, even though Osaka is relatively south, but avoiding Chinese interference was the key.
1368.0012 2.2. 2200 Radio Thailand. Not a rarity on this frequency, but it was nice to get the opening station identifications. This transmitter is relaying 891 kHz, but the location is unclear. In PAL Buriram is listed as relaying 891 kHz, but Asiawaves lists only the Nan station active (of the two Sor Wor Thor stations here).
1394.9999 2.2. 2200 Sathani Witthayu 914, Chiang Rai, with a neat ID. The transmission began a few minutes before the top of the hour. With a Hifi quality ID, I should finally send them a reception report.
1467 5.2. 1540 JONB NHK2 Nagano.
1475.9969 1.2.
2.2.
1908
1800
Radio Tarbiyah Sunnah, Bandung. Teaching of the Sunnah, mostly in Indonesian, with some Arabic thrown in. This seems to identify clearly but not too often.
1521 1.2. 1540 JORB NHK2 Kochi (1152) via Nakamura.
1521 5.2. 1540 JOPB NHK2 Shizuoka (639) via JODC.

kHz: day.month. time UTC: station, comments:
567 12.2. 1200 Radio New Zealand, Wellington. Other logged RNZ transmitters on 630, 729, 756, 819, 837, 1116, 1314 and 1449 kHz, but I have all of them verified from previous years. KGUM from Guam here later at 1400.
648 2.2. 1905 6GF ABC Goldfields, Kalgoorlie WA. The same programming was heard at this time also on ABC stations on 558 and 1188 AM.
657 12.2. 1112 Star, Tauranga/Wellington, was heard with a strong echo, indicating that both transmitters were audible. Star was heard briefly also on 576 and 882 AM.
675 1.2. 1900 6BE ABC Kimberley, Broome WA. A bit of the "Overnights" show (which was also heard on ABC Perth on 810 AM), and then into ABC News
719.9971 2.2. 1815 6WF ABC Perth. Already QSLed, but mentioned because of the distinctive offset (a new one to me), and unusual programming. There was a slot for emergency information at this time because of ongoing bushfires.
729 11.2. 1957 RRI Nabire was caught live opening its transmission for the day.
756 10.2. 1230 Radio New Zealand, Auckland, is a pretty common station, and one of the strongest Kiwis this afternoon.
792 12.2. 1200 Gold AM, Hamilton. Gold AM was heard also strong on 1503 kHz, and weak on 1125 and 1332 kHz.
801.0000 4.2.
12.2.
1600
1300
KTWG Asan, Guam. ID: "Keeping you company on Guam and in the Marianas, we're KTWG AM 800 Hagåtña, Guam ..." - A relatively common catch, but always nice to hear a station from this exotic location, which I was lucky to visit a few years earlier doing a news report about the ubiquitous brown tree snakes.
854.9993 12.2. 1205 Rhema, Hamilton. Rhema was heard also on 1251 kHz.
945 12.2. 1159 + Newstalk ZB, Gisborne. Part of a local spot was heard. The Chinese and Japanese stations were holding their breath just at the right time.
963 2.2. 1826, 1900 6TZ Triple M Southwest, Bunbury WA with a bunch of local spots. The same spot for "Broadwater Resort Como" was heard on both occasions.
990 8.2. 1458 Gold FM, Naulu, was heard on several days, but particularly strong at this time.
1017.0055 12.2. 1133 A3Z Radio Tonga, Nuku'alofa. The station is very common in Lapland, but this is just to note the current offset. Also, at this particular time there is a local newscast in English, which is a very interesting window to the current affairs of the nation.
1026.0011 12.2. 1121 Newstalk ZB, Whangarei.
1026.0026 12.2. 1121 Newstalk ZB, Kaitaia. These Newstalk ZB stations aren't really rarities, but for once it was possible to distinguish the exact offsets of both transmitters. Newstalk ZB stations were heard also on 1008, 1035, 1080, 1197, 1278 and 1296 kHz.
1034.9982 4.2.
12.2.
1349 Newstalk ZB, Wellington. This is the most common Kiwi station, and mentioned here because of the useful indicator offset. If it doesn't feature prominently on your screen, you can forget about other NZ stations as well.
1107.0003 4.2.
8.2.
12.2.
1400
1000
1114
Magic Talk, Tauranga, is the second strongest Kiwi AM station after Newstalk ZB on 1035 kHz. On Feb. 12th Magic Talk was heard also on 702 and 1233 kHz.
1241.9924 12.2. 1200 1XX Whakatane, listed to indicate its conspicuous offset frequency, which however wasn't entirely stable.
1368 12.2. 1159 + Magic Talk, Napier (Hawkes Bay) was a rare new catch and the result of hard work. I combed the Kiwi recordings of February 12th for over 100 hours.
1503.0030 12.2. 1200 Gold AM, Wellington. Worth logging, because some of the spots were local (such as "Wellington Beds"), so finally I was able to tell the difference between transmitters in Wellington and in Christchurch on this frequency. No sign of the latter one though. Gold AM replaced Radio Sport, which was discontinued because of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

 North America
kHz: day.month. time UTC: station, comments:

As an exception, I have listed the call letters of ALL identified North American stations, and not just rarities, to give an idea which ones can be considered more or less regular catches in Aihkiniemi. My personally new catches or otherwise exceptionally interesting stations are listed with full date, time and location data.

1420 11.2. 0844 UNID station announcing only its FM frequency "102.3". I have extensively researched every station on the frequency, listening to all available program feeds and even calling some stations, but I still haven't been able to figure out the source of this ID, which was heard twice this morning.
1420     WHK WOC WAOC WBSM KTOE KITI KUJ
1430 11.2. 0801 + WDJS Mount Olive NC was a really neat surprise. Only the end of the legal ID was audible, but it was enough: "... W273DV 102.5 FM Goldsboro." This station doesn't have any presence on the Internet, which is rare nowadays.

1440 11.2. 0600 WWCL Lehigh Acres FL, "Radio Visión Cristiana", with the same network ID that can most often be heard on 1020 AM.
1440 11.2. 0938 WFNY Gloversville NY. Initially my reception was a bit tentative, because I only heard a sung station ID. Enter the help of fellow hobbyists. Many thanks to Alan Pennington who heard a nearly identical jingle, nailing the identity of the station, and to Bruce Portzer, who gave me a working email address for the station!

600.0056 11.2. 0900 YNA3MD La Nueva Radio Ya, Managua. I got this verified a decade earlier, and hearing it again was a rare opportunity.
740.0053 11.2. 0919 + YNA3LS Radio La Sandino, Managua, caught my attention with its unknown offset, and hearing the ID was a huge surprise. After first picking up La Nueva Radio Ya on 600 AM, this raised hope for more Central American stations, but I didn't find anything more from the region.
950 1.2. 0713 XEKAM Tijuana BC, "Radio Fórmula".
1190.0015 12.2. 0522 XEPZ Cd. Juárez CH, "El Heraldo Radio".
1350 11.2. 0300 Radio Libertad, Puerto Padre. Oddly, the station name sounds really strange in the ID, but everything else matches what is listed: "Esta es Radio ... 1350 kiloherz en amplitud modulada, y 93.3 de la FM, desde Puerto Padre, la Villa Azul de Cuba".
1440 11.2. 0401 HIAK Radio Impactante, Santo Domingo. The station gave a bilingual English-Spanish ID for a Texan station (KGWP on 91.1 FM) at the top of the hour, which was very confusing. Noted here as a warning to self.
1570 13.2. 0402 TGVE Radio VEA, Guatemala.
1629.9956 12.2. 0205 Radio Elohim, San Salvador, was much closer to the nominal frequency than I expected. The station was relaying programming from its older transmitter on 1120 AM.

550 8.2. 0622 LRG206 La Primera, Neuquen.
639.9991 5.2. 0632 + Radio ACLO Tarija, Tarija, was a major surprise. Reception quality peaked just at the right time, so I got an ID in almost hi-fi quality.
659.9971 5.2. 0624 CB66 Radio Divina, Santiago. No ID, but this is the only Chilean station here. The station gave a time check 9 minutes behind the real time, but who cares, time flies when listening to the radio! I got a friendly verification from Pastor Iván Moisés Arriagada, who recognized his own voice in my recording. He asked me to record a message for his listeners, so I made not only a recording, but also a video, which he promised to post on his social media accounts.
670.0046 8.2. 0314 ZYJ248 Rádio Cidade, Curitiba PR. I got this one verified years ago as Rádio Globo, but noted here because of the offset.

ZP11 Radio Caritas, Ñemby (Asunción). With a power of 50 kW, this should be a much more common station, but this DXpedition was the first time when I was able to identify it.
730 8.2. 0259 CX10 Radio Continente, Montevideo, with a detailed top-of-the hour station ID.
760.0011 5.2. 0618 CB76 Radio Colo Colo, Santiago. This is listed as Radio Cooperativa in WRTH and elsewhere, but I heard Radio Colo Colo programming. It is hard to keep up to date on the changes of the AM dial in Chile.
779.9854 10.2. 0301 ZYI771 Rádio Jornal, Recife PE. The longer version of the name "Rádio Jornal do Comercio", which is still listed in the WRTH, seems to be history. Many thanks to Samuel Cássio who was able to transliterate every word of the ID which I heard: "Meia-noite e um, a partir de agora na Rádio Jornal, Madrugada com os Reis, um show..."
820.0000 10.2. 0101 ZYH752 Rádio Bandeirantes, Goiânia GO
829.9945 11.2. 0100 ZYL244 Rádio Cultura, Belo Horizonte MG. This station is nowadays affiliated with Rádio América (750 AM), and part of the time both air the same Rede Catedral programming.
879.9588 5.2. 0637 CB88 Radio Red Aleluya, Santiago. This station (ex-Colo Colo) now airs Iglesia Universal programming.
929.6175 11.2. 0059 CB30 Radio Nuevo Mundo, Santiago.
930.0009 4.2. 2159 ZYH646 Rádio Metropolitana, Caucaia CE. This is a common station, but mentioned here because it seems to abbreviate its name to "Rádio Metro."

CB96 Dossil Radio Chile, Santiago. I already thought I had a new station, but this is of course the same one that used to be called Radio Carrera.
1010 3.2. 0605 ZYJ263 Rádio Celinauta, Pato Branco PR, with frequent program announcements for "Madrugada Franciscana". The station will move to FM later in 2021. A small museum is planned to commemorate the history of this AM station.
1010 5.2. 0427 ZYK611 Rádio Diário, Martinópolis SP, identified very often with a simple "Diário!" jingle. Rádio Diário plans to move to FM in late 2021, but the AM transmitter will remain on the air, to be rebranded as CBN Prudente with a 24-hour news format.
1019.9924 6.2. 2302 ZYH247 Rádio Maceió, Rio Largo AL, was still on the air in February 2021, but signed off at some point later. In August I got a verification from a journalist who told me that the owner was no longer interested in continuing AM broadcasts, and the station only transmits on the internet. The station has discontinued updating its Facebook page, and its website is said to be under reconstruction.
1039.9797 8.2. 0617 LRG203 Radio Capital "Antena 10", Santa Rosa, with a load of local commercial spots. The station responded that it is authorized to transmit at 10 kW of power during daytime and 5 kW at nights, but at the time of my listening, the power was only 2 kW.
1069.9603 8.2. 0610 ZYK615 Rádio Metropolitana, Mogi das Cruzes SP. Watch out for the more common Prudente AM, which is on a nearby offset frequency, at 1069.9648 kHz.
1090.0000 4.2. 0700 HJIH Radio Reloj Boyacá, Sogamoso. Back in 1993 I heard Caracol here for the first time, but then there were two transmitters simulcasting, the other being from Cúcuta. Nowadays they are airing different programming, so finally it is possible to tell the difference between these Caracol stations.

CB110 BBN Viña del Mar. A bit earlier the more common BBN Santiago was heard really strong on 1000 AM with a local station ID. On the first morning I only caught a generic BBN ID on 1100 AM, but on the second morning a phone number for the Viña del Mar station was announced.
1120.0031 6.2. 2300 ZYL272 Rádio Itatiaia, Ouro Preto MG, is missing from the 2021 WRTH.
1140.0013 10.2. 0402 + ZYK228 Rádio Cruz Alta AM, Cruz Alta RS.
1179.9970 3.2. 0629 CX118 Radio La Voz de Artigas, Artigas.
1189.9681 4.2. 0657 OAU9J Radio Visión, Nueva Cajamarca.

1209.9962 4.2. 0659 HJFR Bésame, Neiva.
1210 8.2. 0100 ZYJ219 Super Rádio Deus e Amor, Curitiba PR, ID as "Super Rádio Curitiba". I guess after listening to this a few times, I should finally send a reception report to IPDA.
1210 8.2. 0302 CW121 Radio El Libertador, Vergara, with Radio Trans Mundial (TWR) programming in Spanish.

CB133 Radio Panamericana, Santiago. A station by this name was here in 1967, but since then the tranmitter has been known by multiple names, most recently Radio Romance AM. It seems that almost every Chilean station heard on this DXpedition was identified with some surprising new name. As of writing this, no sign of Radio Panamericana having launched here or moved to this frequency can be found on the internet. The (old) frequency of 1420 AM was even announced in an ID heard on 1330 AM, so probably 1330 is just relaying 1420. The station used the slogan "Una nueva voz de esperanza para Chile".
1369.9894 10.2. 2304 ZYH628 Rádio Vanguarda, Caridade CE.
1370 8.2. 0000 CW137 Radio San Javier, San Javier, was heard identifying also as Radio Regional. As a result of my reception report, the local newspaper Diario El Telégrafo in Paysandú wrote an article about my reception, claiming this to be the longest distance (13,255 km) that the station has ever been heard at. Part of the article is online.
1400 9.2. 0601 + Radio Salavina, Castelar BA, announcing its telephone number for listeners to call in.
1429.9514 8.2. 0539 Radio Cunumi Guasú, Rafael Castillo.
1461.2755 5.2. -0300* ZYK214 Rádio Cultura de Bagé, Bage RS, signing off at midnight local time. Quite a large deviation from its nominal frequency.
1490 2.2.

+ Rádio Super, Belo Horizonte MG. This is a quirky station, because it has never been listed in the WRTH, as far as I know. However, it has apparently operated on 1490 AM since 2011. In 2019 it was supposed to become FM only (100.5 MHz), but has obviously all along continued broadcasts on the AM band as well. The AM frequency continues to be shown both on its website and its super popular Facebook page, which recently changed from https://www.facebook.com/radiosuperfmbh to https://www.facebook.com/radiosuper100.5fm. The FM prefix is listed as ZYN209, but the AM prefix is nowhere to be found. This is a Christian station owned by Igreja Batista da Lagoinha. After many attempts to contact the station I finally received a proper verification from its Instagram account.

1560 11.2. 0103 HJHE Voces Rovirenses, Málaga.
1570 10.2. 0105 ZYJ832 Rádio Tangará, Tangará SC. Within 20 minutes, there were also station identifications from Rádio Povo and Rádio Socorro, two more common stations, but no sign of the dominant Rádio ABC until 0200 UTC. There was also an unknown station retransmitting "Evangelizar FM".
