New Argentine stations on 1320, 1510 and 1620 kHz mediumwave

Quinta Provincia AM is a new station operating on 1320 kHz in Partido de La Matanza in the Greater Buenos Aires area, Argentina. The station was first reported heard by Norberto Pugliese. At least on November 20 Quinta Provincia AM was still testing, with occasional station identifications between pieces of romantic music. Radio Ciudad de Lanús, previously on 1320 AM, has moved to 1020 kHz to escape the interference caused by Quinta Provincia AM, an unlicensed station.
     Another new station AM Panamericana has been heard on 1510 kHz with programming aimed at the Bolivian community of Buenos Aires. AM Panamericana broadcasts from the same studios as Estación Latina (FM 91.9 MHz). Its address is Pasaje Espinillo 1449, Planta Alta, C1407ISA, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Telephone numbers are (011) 4683-3641 and 4683-3642. Information about the station was submitted by Marcelo Cornachioni in Conexión Digital on November 25.
     Also, Radio Mar del Plata has been observed testing the frequency of 1620 kHz with various program feeds. Brazilian DXer Samuel Cássio caught a station identification for Radio Universo FM (in parallel with 103.3 FM) on November 7, reported on Condig mailing list. The same station has also been referred to as Radio Prensa.

U.S. government closing down shortwave transmitters

The U.S. government International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB) has closed down a historic shortwave transmitter site in Delano, California, and has announced plans to discontinue another transmitter site in Morocco.
     The Delano site was closed on October 28. It included a total of 23 shortwave antennas, as well as seven 250 kW and two 50 kW shortwave transmitters, in an area of 800 acres (320 hectares). The Delano site became operational in 1944, and its first three transmitters were originally known by their call letters KCBA, KCBF and KCBR. The Delano site was mostly used by the Voice of America (VOA) and the American Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) for transmissions beamed to East Asia, the Pacific and the Americas.
     By closing down Delano, IBB hopes to save $1.8 million a year. Since 2003, personnel at Delano had already diminished from 20 to seven.
     According to IBB's Kim Elliott, IBB is also planning to close down a shortwave transmitter site in Briech, Morocco, in March 2008. The site hosts ten 500 kW transmitters, currently operated at half power. Briech is used by both the Voice of America and Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL). The closure will not affect the number of broadcast hours - all current transmissions will continue from other shortwave installations. The Briech transmitter site will be handed over to the government of Morocco, which has not yet announced whether it will continue using the site for its own shortwave transmissions.
