KAMU9 DXpedition Report
November 24 - December 8, 1990

KAMU9 was one of those early DXpeditions where I couldn't take any more equipment than I would be able to carry - so just one receiver.

First I took a train to Oulu, where Ari Kilponen was waiting, and we continued up to Kaamasmukka in Ari's car. I had my Yeasu FRG-7700, but Ari's equipment included three receivers; JRC NRD-525, Collins R-390A and Eska RX33.

In terms of antennae Kaamasmukka is quite a challenge, as the area is mostly Arctic tundra with hardly any trees. The antennae need to be hung up on poles because otherwise reindeer – and there are lots of them – would mess everything. There are no permanent antenna installations in Kaamasmukka, so putting it all up, keeping it up, and eventually taking it down means a lot of work.

Fortunately there were DXers in this location before and after our DXpedition, so we only needed to put up 2 kilometers of wire and take down 5 kilometers... When completed, both listeners were able to use four longwire antennae, each 800-1000 meters in length, directed to Central and North America. We added an antenna directed to Japan, and of course the Japanese stations were coming strong only when we were out working on that antenna...

The best time for North American stations was overnight November 27-28th, when the first stations (from Quebec) were audible already at 2000 UTC. No rarities, but we picked up some new regional channel stations that night. Solar indices didn't show any radical change, but from Friday, November 30th, conditions deteriorated, and for a week, North American stations were only audible around sunrise in Finland (around 0600-0900 UTC). As a result, we paid more attention to other continents, Ari hunted Pacific stations and Mika also Asian stations.

My best catch was probably WHYZ Sans Souci SC on 1070 kHz. I was also happy to hear for the first time an AM station from Australia, namely 4QD Emerald on 1548 kHz.

For a detailed list of what we heard, see the KAMU9 DXpedition log, which includes loggings of both me and Ari. For some logging guidelines, check out notes on the log.
